July 19 - Whale Watching

We were very lucky today to not only have spotted two blue whales but to have seen three other species - the fin, the humpback, and the minke. I was excited to spot a spouting whale above the surface of the water and saw the whale dive, fins straight up in the air. The excitement was contagious. Someone would spot a whale in the Saguenay-St. Lawrence fjord, iPhones would start clicking pictures, we'd wait for the dive, and wait again for the whale to resurface.

I was amazed at some of the whale facts we learned. The 98 foot blue whale is the largest mammal in the world. The 170 ton whale has a heart the size of a VW Jetta and a tongue that weighs more than an elephant. I'm now anxious to learn more about whales and specific species after my Intro 101 course in whale watching.
