August 3 - 55 miles on the Erie Canal

Eric Canal

Our group entered the Erie Canal at Brockport, NY, early in the morning. During our journey we learned about the history of the canal and how the locks function. The canal spans 524 miles across New York State and links the Hudson River with Lake Champlain, Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes, Niagara River, and Lake Erie. The Erie Canal dramatically lowered the price of shipping goods from western territories to the Atlantic coast. The section in Brockport was built in 1823 and by 1860 was widened to double it's size to 7 feet deep and 70 feet wide.

Minion and I enjoyed our day on the canal. Our 55 mile trip should have taken 5 hours but took over 8. Today was a special day to relax on the canal, stop in towns along the way, and just "smell the roses". The famous song "Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal" now had lots of meaning.
