I never thought I'd see this sight - Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Lincoln - created by the sculptor Gutzon Borglum. He created these four figures "to create an eternal reminder of the birth, growth, preservation and development of a nation dedicated to democracy and the pursuit of individual liberty."
Construction at Mt. Rushmore began in 1921 and was completed in 1941. The figures were dynamited out by miners using simple measurements to create figures of such stature. It is still hard to believe some of the measurements I read about. The heads are 60 feet tall, the average of a six foot building. Washington's nose is 21 feet high, his eyes are 11 feet wide, and his mouth is 18 feet wide!
